In the heart of Lusaka, amidst the struggle of daily life, a quiet revolution is taking place—one punch, one kick, and one life at a time. Ulemu Fight Academy, Zambia’s first MMA fight team and youth development hub, is doing more than training athletes. It’s building futures through combat, compassion, and community.
At the core of this mission is the Vulnerable Youth Program (VYP) - an innovative initiative that uses MMA to reach underprivileged and street-connected youth. For many of these children, Ulemu is their first safe space, their first team, and their first real chance at a better life. Structured across three 12-week cycles per year, the program reaches over 200 children per cycle, teaching discipline, focus, and respect while addressing real social issues such as gender-based violence, literacy, mental health, and substance abuse.
Known locally as Ulemu Tandizo—meaning “Respect” and “Helping Together”—this program goes beyond sport. Each session is an immersive learning experience, led by certified coaches, mentors, and community leaders. The 12-point life skills curriculum empowers youth through storytelling, training, role-play, and trauma-informed discussion. From learning how to express emotion without violence to understanding their legal rights, participants gain tools for personal growth and community contribution.
For many, the highlight of the program is earning the Ulemu “Little Champion Vest” upon completion - a symbol of transformation and pride. Hundreds have already completed the course, and the ripple effect is spreading: kids stay in school, build self-worth, and become leaders in their homes and communities.
From each VYP cycle, a select group of standout participants are chosen to join the Ulemu Lions, an elite youth team receiving long-term support. Each Lion receives education support, nutrition, transport, advanced training, mentorship, and exposure to national and international competition pathways. For just 2,000 ZMW per month, a donor can sponsor a child through this journey—investing in more than an athlete, but a leader, a coach, a changemaker in the making.
The Ulemu Lions represent hope—young people who were once on the margins of society now walking the path toward greatness in sport and in life.
To take this vision further, Ulemu is building the Ulemu Performance Institute - a world-class combat sports and events facility right here in Zambia. With a funding goal of $2.5 million USD, the Institute will include tiered seating for events, dedicated training and conditioning zones, treatment and recovery rooms, dormitories for exchange programs, broadcast media suites, and restaurants to support long-term sustainability.
More than a gym, the Institute will be a hub for national and continental events, including the Zambia National Amateur League, and a centre of excellence for both athletes and coaches. It will house the Ulemu Lions, provide training for vulnerable youth, and be a beacon of hope for thousands across the country. It’s where champions will be made—and where lives will be changed.
Your support can change everything. 50,000 ZMW a month runs the entire VYP program. 2,000 ZMW a month supports a Lion. A capital investment brings the Performance Institute to life. Join us in this mission—not just to fight poverty, but to fight for dignity, purpose, and a stronger Zambia. Ulemu means respect. And respect begins with action.
